vCenter appliance embedded database maintenance jobs

My question is concerning vCenter server appliance 5.5 u2a using the embedded database, specifically around database retention policy.  The server's database has grown from 40% to 62% in the last month or so, in order to stem the growth I have set logging options to Errors only (was warnings and errors) and I have enforced a retention policy of 30 days from within the vSphere client.  As you will notice from my questions, I am NOT a DBA so my questions are:

1. When does the appliance begin to trim those older entries from the database?

2. Does it retroactively begin to delete entries past 30 days as soon as I hit OK (which it doesn't seem to do)?

3. Are there set database maintenance schedules that go through and clean out stale data?  If there are, how do I find out when they run?

4. After setting those options from within the vCenter client, do I have to reboot the appliance for them to take affect?

5. Will the vCenter server only database retention policy only go into affect from the day it was set?

Thank you for responses in advance
