License file download from host.mydomain.com to vCenter Server failed due to exception: vim.fault.SSLVerifyFault.

When I try to add my ESXi hosts to the vCenter server I get the error "License file download from host.mydomain.com to vCenter Server failed due to exception: vim.fault.SSLVerifyFault.".  I have SSL certificates from a MS CA installed on the vCenter Appliance 5.1 and the ESXi 5.1 hosts.  I recently had to rebuild my vCenter server but previously it was working with these same certificates.  Was there a trick to get the ESXi hosts to join that I have forgotten?

If I log onto the vCenter App. it looks like the root certificate is installed already.  In /etc/ssl/certs it is already hashed and symlinked to VMware-SSO-SecurityTokenService-Root-CA.pem.  Also I can't uncheck "vCenter Server requires verified host SSL certificates" because its greyed out.
