Privileges with user in multiple groups

$

Hi all,

I'm having a problem regarding privileges on a farm at my job place. The problem is this: my user is part of a group (authenticated against an Active Directory domain) that has the role of Administrator for the entire farm. However, on a specific folder, another group (of which I'm also a member, same AD domain) is set up with the role of Virtual Machine User.

The result is that the privilege level I have on the folder is not that of an administrator, but the one of a simple user (so the lowest level possible).

Is there a way to change this behaviour, maybe with a configuration setting? It's not possible to have my username removed from the second group, I have to find another way.

Please help me solve this.

Best regards,

Alberto M.

Snaphots & virtual hardware

Does reverting to a previous snapshot bring back the old virtual hardware the VM had and remove the hardware which has been added after the snapshot .?

For example,

1. I have a VM with 1 NIC.

2. Now I take snapshot 1.

3. Add one more NIC. Now  I have 2 NICs.

4. Revert to Snapshot 1.   ; After the revert operation how many NICs will I have and why .?

I reffered to the kb article: VMware KB: Working with snapshots     and it says snapshots  "Includes the settings and configuration of a virtual machine and its virtual hardware."

Can some here get me some clarity on this.

VCenter Server 5.1 show migrated VM on old and new Storage

Hello,

we update 2 vsphere 5.0 Hosts to 5.1 and the vcenter too. Now we connect new Storage to the vsphere Hosts and migrate some of the VMs on the new Store.

(all of them have latest VMtools installed, are the latest VM HW-Version, they have no ISO, Floppy-Images or something else attached) Cause of Vsphere Essential we made the Storage Migration when then VMs were offline.

After the successfull storage-migration of all VMs, we saw that 3 VMs show us under Resources of the VM the old and the new datastore, also on the inventory of the datastore we saw on both datastore the vm, but when we browse the datastore the VMS are only (correct) on the new datastore.

I know that happens if some iso, images etc. are connected when the VM ist migrated, but we checked that double an there is no reference to the old datastore at the settings of the VM. When we connect direct to the host the VM datastore is show us correct only the new datastore.

How can we fix this????

Best regards

Missing Virtual Machine Fields

Recently we noticed that when looking at the virtual machine tab in VCenter Server there were certain machines that had information missing. For example, the DNS column had a number of machines with no info. We are thinking it has to do with VM Tools being out of date. Anyone ran into this before?

How to add an ESXi 4.1 in a vCenter 5.5?

Hi

We are involved in a migration project since ESX/ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.  Now all my infrastructure is managed by a vcenter 4.1 and it manages several ESX 4.1 and ESXi 4.1.  Recently we've bought a new license for vcenter 5.5 and I've installed it.  Before upgrade the hosts to 5 release, I want to manage them into the new vcenter but when I try to add them into it, I get this error message:  "The host is licensed with vsphere 4 Hypervisor.  The license edition of vcenter server does not support vsphere 4 hypervisor."

How can I get this license key?

Thanks for your help

Best Regards!

I'm trying to connect ESX 4.1 to newly installed vCenter server 5.

vCenter can connect, see all VMs and even start dowloading informations. But after 3% it shows genereal error: internat error.

In /var/log/vmware/hostd.log i found:

ESX 4.1 has self signed certificate which was created during installation.

Does anyone what should I do to resolve this problem ?

How to go from vCenter Server 5.1 on Windows to vCenter Server Appliance

I have a vCenter Server 5.1 environment running on a windows server 2008 for testing.  I let the Windows Server 2008 server demo elapse because we wanted to go to the vCenter Server Applicance instead.  What version of vCenter Server appliance do I need to download and make it work correctly?  I first downloaded the vCenter Server Appliance 5.1 applicance.  File names for .ovf file VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.10200-1235310_OVF10.ovf  and associated files.   It gave me an error when trying to add my two hosts to the new DataCenter I created.

Something to do with the license being incorrect.

I figured I had to new of a version of the VCSA so I downloaded version *5.0.0.8512-1302764_ovf10.ovf and .vmdk files and installed it.  It doesn't let me bring in the hosts either.  When I do it gives me a general error:  "A general system error occurred: Timed waiting for vpxa to start".

The version of VMware vSphere in the help files show Version 5.0.0 Build 1300600.

Any help would be appreciated.  I just wanted my two VMware 5.1 Essentials Hosts to be connected to VMware vCenter Server appliance for management.

Thanks in advance for any help..

Appliance v5.5.0a and SSO and AD Group Authentication

$

Hi,

I just setup a new vCenter Server Appliance v5.5.0a and need to use AD groups to do the authentication.  I have a service desk group that I want add to the vcenter permissions.  I am a little confused on how to do this with the appliance.  All my experience has been with Windows vCenter up to know and I have never had an issue.  The VCSA is joinded to DOMAINA.  I have a group GROUPA in DOMAINA that is a Security Group - Domain Local group.  Members are from 4 different domains.  What do I need to do to get this GROUPA groups working, so that anyone that is a member of that group can login.  I tried adding that group to the vCenter permissions and when I login with a user, it states I do not have permission.  If I add that same user explicitly, I can log in with no errors, so I know the profile is correct.

I am a little confused on how SSO works with AD groups.  What do I have to create and where?

Thakns for your help.

Licensing vCenter

I am trying to license an install of Vcenter and HP esxi5.0 servers but the keys are being rejected, one of the errors  reads : No matching Licenses found.

I presume the keys are correct I cannot tell from the numbers provided, the Details include Annotation: D9Y41AAE VMw vSOM eNTPLUS 1P E-LTU

Upon trying the keys I get no matching licenses found! Key plus License PKI type of authenticating I get it, so Does a download of vcenter come complete with licensing waiting for a key, dose an evaluation version of vcenter differ from any other.?

100 Win7 Guest OS did not join domain because network access went down during deployments

$

**If this is not the correct forum please advise**

While doing a mass deployment of VM's the Port Group config was modified and prevented the systems from receiving a DHCP address. The join domain function executed on all systems but failed. Since it is added to a run once key, it does not attempt the join on subsequent re-boots. Now they come up in a work-group and get a DHCP address. We can get to the systems through the VM client and join to domain manually but this is a tedious process. I have the ability to join the systems to the domain through a variety of scripting methods that all rely on me getting the script to a system that is not part of the domain. I have poked around at using other methods like leveraging AD, but of course I'm not on the domain. I do not have a deployment tool that can deliver the scripts either. Thus far i have not been able to identify a tool from Microsoft that can help with my particular situation. I am hoping I can do it using a VMware based tool so I am reaching out to see if there is something here that I am not aware of. .

VMPowerShellCLI - This seems promising as I have successfully ran the power-shell commands to add a machine to the domain. Is this a good option? I have not had a chance to work with it, nor do we have it installed. I do not know if there is a vCenter piece, esx host piece etc. I do not want to attempt to use this approach with a short timeline unless I can get some feed back that suggests its a good use of time.

Orchestrator - We have a new install of Orchestrator running, but when I engage the function to bring up inventory it is not responding currently. If need be, I can get a ticket opened on this but again, its a best use of time thing. Since this will not be a high priority ticket it might take a few days to get resolved. However, if this is the way to go, then we will get the ticket open. .

VMtools - What I was really hoping is that I could leverage VMTools for a down and dirty quick fix. I want to deliver the scripts and execute or add a reg key to run at start up. I could not find that it could do that when i searched for it directly, but it seems that there should be a way to add the scripts in with the VMTools files on the vCenter server so they get delivered when the guest is doing an upgrade. But from there I do not know how invasive it would be to have the client execute a script.

I think that covers the basics for this issue. Thanks!

vSphere Web Client on OSX no mouse pointer issue

$

I have upgraded vCenter server to 5.5.0a which makes available client integration tools for OSX, which means that virtual consoles through vSphere web client are supposed to be supported on Mac.  In general the web client works very well, except that if I open a virtual console on a VM which does not have vmware tools installed, such as a fresh install, there is no mouse pointer.  After vmware tools installs and the server reboots (on a Windows Server) the mouse pointer becomes available.  Unfortunately it's often the reason I would go to the console that I need to install vmware tools or vmware tools quit working, which makes this a very annoying bug.  Anyone aware of a workaround?

My environment right now has only ESXi 5.1 hosts, with vCenter 5.5.  This occurs in both Firefox and Chrome on 10.8 and 10.9.

SSO registration failed while installing VMware vCenter 5.5 Error29113

Hi Friends,

I have downloaded VMware vSphere 5.5. Last two days I was trying to install vCenter 5.5 but could able to do. Let me explain thoroughly.

Domain Controller - dc.company.pri (192.168.0.100) Windows 2008 r2

Member of the domain - vc.dc.company.pri (192.168.0.201) Windows 2008 r2  --> Here I am trying to install vCenter

I am using VMware Work-Station 10 evolution version. In my laptop I have got i5 with 16 GB RAM. Everything went smooth till "Select inventory size that best describes your devolopment" but in SSO registration I am struggling.

SSO administrator user name : administrator@vsphere.local

SSO administrator Password - Passw0rd

Lookup Service URL - https://<SSO Machine FQDN Or IP>:7444/lookupservice/sdk

Now if I press next button then I am getting following errors

"SSO registration failed. To remedy this:

- Verify that the certificate file specified in vcsso.properties is valied.

- Varify that the clock in the Single Sign In system and the vCenter Server system are in sync.

- Check the vm_ssoreglog in the system temporary folder for more details on the error.

Search the VMware knowledge base (http://kb.vmware.com) for "Error 29113" for more information"

I have no clue what should I do. Kindly help me regarding this issue.

Thanks a lot in advance !

Alarm for loss of connection of dvUplink?

$

Hi,

is there a way to define an alarm which triggers, if one of the physical adapters (which is configured as an dvUplink of a DVS) of a host loses his connection? I have a DVS with 2 active adapters and one standby  adapter. I would like to be notified if one of the active dvUplinks of an went down and the standby adapter becomes active. I thought the default "Loss of network connection"-alarm for a host will trigger if that happens - but it wont. VCenter shows no hint at all, if a nic which is an dvuplink went down.

I've already searched for possible alarm triggers in the DVS- and dvPortGroup-objects, but i cant find any eligible trigger...

vCenter Server 5.5 installation, MSSQL problem

Hi,

I'm installing vCenter Server 5.5. I've already created MSSQL database, users and roles with all required permissions, using scripts from installation directory.

During installing, after entering database credentials, the error message appears: "The DB user entered does not have the required permissions needed to install and configure vCenter Server with the selected DB. Correct the following errors: The database user 'vpxuser' does not have the following privileges on the 'VCDB' database:..."(details on screenshots).

vMotion Compatibilty and Storage Question?

$

I currently have 2 servers,

ESXI 1 - 2 x Intel Xeon @ CPU E5520 @ 2.27GHz (4 Cores)

ESXI 2 - Intel Xeon ® CPU X5670 @ 2.93GHz (6 Cores)

We are looking at upgrading our currently essentials kit to essentials plus to use vMotion, I wanted to double check that our current CPUs would be compatible, they are the same CPU type but I am abit concerned that the processor numbers are not the same, is this likely to have an impact if we upgrade?

Also we are currently looking into upgrading our storage solution, we are currently using a total of 4.5TB (only a small company) and are looking to get a storage solution which will give us 8TB with a view to expand if we like, there are so many brands out there, (We are currently with Dell, but wanted to check all avenues) which storage solution do you think is best for the money

VirtualMachine.Destory_Task not removing VM folder and VMDK file in datastore

$

0

When we programmatically destory a VM using  VirtualMachine.Destory_Task method, we are noticing that VM is gone from vsphere UI and most of the files from the housing datastore are gone, but the folder itself (typically named after the vm) is not deleted and the vmdk file exists in the folder with a size of 0 bytes.

We observed the same behavior when destroying a VM using vSphere UI's 'Delete from Disk' option.

An interesting thing is, when we create a brand new vm and do the destroy, the datastore is cleaned up entirely. But if we wait, like for a day after vm creation, the stuff is left behind in the datstore forever.

Any help is appreciated. The datastores are ending up with a large number of folders with empty vmdk files - no big deal but just an inconvenience and a pain.

Thanks Rags
