Can't delete files of destroyed VM

Hi!

I have a problem deleting some files of an already destroyed virtual machine. This is what I get when attempting to delete the folder:

########################

root@xxx yyy_zzz# rm -rf VM/

rm: cannot remove `VM//VM_2-flat.vmdk': Device or resource busy

rm: cannot remove `VM//VM-flat.vmdk': Device or resource busy

rm: cannot remove `VM//VM_1-flat.vmdk': Device or resource busy

rm: cannot remove `VM//VM-53afe79d.vswp': Device or resource busy

root@xxx yyy_zzz# cd VM/

root@xxx yyy_zzz# vmkfstools -U VM_1-flat.vmdk

Failed to delete virtual disk: Device or resource busy 1048585

#######################

The files are located on a LUN shared by seven ESX 3.02 Servers. What can I do to find out which process/system is locking those files? And how can I finally remove this folder?

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Importing OVA into VCSA 6.5 fails - The operation failed for an unknown reason

I'm trying to import an OVA via the vSphere Flash Client. The VCSA is running 6.5 GA, however I@m getting the following error.

The SSL certificate is imported and as you can see from the attached screenshot, there are no SSL warnings in the browser.

The VCSA was configured with the IP as it's system name. I think there is another issue and the SSL warning is just a guess at the problem.

Has anyone else seen this behavior before? The particular OVA file imported fine with 6.0. I'm unable to import it via ESXi because it needs to be done via the VC due to an error trying it that way earlier.

The operation failed for an undetermined reason. Typically this problem occurs due to certificates that the browser does not trust. If you are using self-signed or custom certificates, open the URL below in a new browser tab and accept the certificate, then retry the operation.

HA won't initialize on cluser host

We have a 4 node vSphere 5.0 cluster, and I've just been finishing off replacing two of the older nodes with brand new (identical) servers. The first host came across fine, and joined the cluster without a problem. The second one will join, but HA will not initialize correctly. After a period of time, I just get 'vSphere HA Agent Unreachable' next to the new host. I've dug around, and have found quite a few references to this problem, but nothing seems to fix it. I'm reasonably sure that the very first time I added the new host, everything looked ok in vCenter. I then proceeded to up the EVC level (part of the plan), and although I can't say it happened exectly when I did this, on or around the same time, I started getting the error.

What I've tried.

1. Full reboot of the new host (no change)

2. Checking all management IP's on the hosts (all ok)

3. ICMP check between all cluster hosts and vCenter (all ok)

3. Checked DNS (all ok)

4. Checked: 'vCenter requires verfied SSL host certificates' (all ok)

5. Reverting EVC level back to the original setting (did not fix it)

I've had a look at vpxa.log, and there doesn't seem to be any problems I can see there, but fdm.log is reporting the following;

2014-11-14T14:51:08.306Z [FFD64B90 verbose 'Cluster' opID=SWI-e6ab007a] [ClusterManagerImpl::IsBadIP] 192.168.xxx.122 is bad ip

2014-11-14T14:51:08.306Z [FFD64B90 verbose 'Cluster' opID=SWI-e6ab007a] [ClusterManagerImpl::IsBadIP] 192.168.xxx.113 is bad ip

2014-11-14T14:51:08.359Z [FFD64B90 verbose 'Cluster' opID=SWI-e6ab007a] [ClusterManagerImpl::IsBadIP] 192.168.xxx.116 is bad ip

In this case, xxx.113 is the management IP of another host in the cluster. xxx.116 is the management IP of the cluster master and xxx.122 is another IP address bound to one of the other hosts, just used for mounting NFS volumes (not management traffic). It just repeats these thee addresses over and over as 'is bad ip' in fdm.log. There's nothing wrong with these addresses. They're not duplicates, and are all in DNS correctly.

So, while I can pretty much see the errors causing this, I don't know how to fix this. Could really do with some advice.

Where is the ESXi OS installed / vCenter Database installed

$

All,

I am new to VMware.

On a server in a lab environment, I installed the ESXi OS.  After configuring the ESXi host and establishing remote connectivity to the ESXi host, I installed the vCenter Server Appliance on the same ESXi host.

How do I find the location of the vCenter Server Appliance database on the ESXi host? What drive was it installed on?  How to do I find the location of the ESXi OS on the Dell server? What drive was it installed on?

Thank you,

T.J.

Two issues... reset local admin (VSphere 6.5) and VMWare Updates not working...

$

One thing leads to another it seems...

I inherited responsibility for a VSphere installation that I've only been able to work on occasionally.  Regardless of that limitation (which I admit is compounding things), I'm trying to work through a few issues.

I did an upgrade to VCenter to 6.5 (from, if memory serves, a 6.0 version that was flagged for needing security updates).  That upgrade went just fine, vSphere is operational, but now everything is done through the vSphere Web Client.  I don't mind that though it is becoming apparent that my account doesn't have all of the permission I would expect it to have and seem to need it to have in some areas.

I had also added in or was finding in the install the piece I was most interested in getting operational - VMWare Update Manager.  Yay, or, uh, not...

In trying to get updates to work, I'm getting a note saying the host can't connect to download content.  I've confirmed firewalls or not interfering but am still not getting there.  Searching through articles, it seems the issue would be that the host isn't configured properly for DNS.  OK, I start looking to check the hosts configuration and seem to be finding I don't have enough rights on my own named account to do that configuration or at least I'm not finding where that configuration is done through the vSphere Web Client *when I am logged in with my named account*.

So... two issues, one, I need to reset the local admin password and two, I'd like to get VMWare Update Manager functioning.  I'm hopeful that once I could check the DNS configuration on the host, I'd find the source of my issue for that part.  But the local admin issue is driving me crazy.  I followed instructions that I found in articles here to use the tool (vdcadmintool) to take care of that process.  I fire up that tool, see numbered menu.  Choose 3 "Reset Account Password".  It prompts for account UPN.  I enter in administrator@vsphere.local but that is apparently not what is being sought or at least that has no effect that I can see except to result in this message:

3

Please enter account UPN : administrator@vsphere.local

VmDirForceResetPassword failed (9106)

For the record, the system I'm working on is a participant in a domain where I am not a domain administrator.  I am an administrator of the server (which is a member server in the domain).

If any other information is needed to help troubleshoot this issue, please advise and I'll add in what I can.

Thanks for any assistance that can be lent here.

two networks showing on vm when only one nic installed.

Hi,

I’ve got a VM which use to have two nics, one nic was on vm
network one vlan 20 and the other was on vm network two vlan 21, one of the
nics was disabled. I have now removed one of the nic’s but when I look at the
standard switch it is still showing the vm to be on both networks. If I look at
the  summary of the vm it also appears
that it is in two networks. This is when viewed for VI client connected to
vcenter. If I connect to the host which the vm is running from then everything
is showing correctly, one nic in one network.

Any ideas how to correct this when viewed from vcenter?

Repoint embedded PSC to a external PSC

$

Hi All,

I have a lab environment deployed with a VCSA v6.5 and an external PSC. I need to add a secondary vCenter server v6.5 deployed on windows server 2012 with an embedded PSC to join the external PSC and enable linked mode between 2 lab environments.

As far as I know to reconfigure embedded PSC to an external one I need to have a replication in between them and replication can only configure during deployment of external PSC.

So since I already have my external PSC deployed how can I achieve this task. Kindly help me out.

Thanks in advance.

vCenter Server Migration

Right now, one or our clients is using vCenter Server on a physical unit.

Since it is running in 5.5 version, we opened up if we could upgrade it to 6.5 and it VM format to leverage features as a VM.

Do VMware has any migration tools to support from physical to virtual?

Or can we just use the usual VMware converter tools?

vCenter Server link mode

Does VMware supports link mode of Different versions of vCenter?

Does it needs that vCenter IPs are in the same range IP range or subnet, or it doesnt matter as long IPs are routable and can ping each other?

memory use vcenter and linux os

we have vcenter 5.5 u2 and esxi 5.5 cluster. Some servers have performance problems. User says memory is not enough. These servers are RedHat 6 or RedHat 7. Virtual machine has 24 gb memory and user says 24 gb full and also 7 gb swap . but i checked the vcenter memory tab and vrealize. The server used max 20 gb of memory  in the last week so vcenter and vrealize says memory is enough for this virtual machine. I have read as many articles as I am now, but for sure I didn't understand what value was correct. Did you have experience. The end user is telling the truth? should I increase ram ? I don't know who I should believe

Run vSphere SDK sample return error "login fault : The server sent HTTP status code 404"

Hi,

I downloaded the vSphere SDK 6.0.0-2561048. And run "run.bat" under SDK\vsphere-ws\java\JAXWS.

command: > run.bat com.vmware.general.GetHostName --url https://[my vcenter IP]/sdk --username [my username] --password [my password].

It returned error:

ERROR: could not connect: login fault : The server sent HTTP status code 404: Not Found

I confirmed that my username and password is correct and have right privilege.

My vCenter is 6.0.0, 3018524.

I tried the same command on another vCenter, it returned the ESXi hosts information.

Can someone tell me what did I miss in the vCenter which returned error?

Thanks!
